Bosque County

Bosque County was established in 1854 and takes its name from the Bosque River. Meridian is the county seat, while Clifton is another important community. Historic farms and buildings reflect several strands of settlement, including Norwegian heritage.

The Bosque River runs through the county from north to south, while the Brazos River and Lake Whitney help define its eastern side. The name Bosque comes from the Spanish word for forest. Meridian serves as the county seat, but Clifton and the rural settlements contribute their own histories. The National Register includes courthouse architecture, rural historic districts and places associated with Norwegian settlement, giving the county a particularly varied heritage map.

Meridian State Park offers a lake and wooded setting for a day outdoors. Plan a park visit through its official guide, and allow time to explore Meridian or Clifton without assuming that historic private homes are open to visitors.

Choose a theme for your visit: Meridian’s civic center, Clifton and nearby settlement history, or the outdoor landscape around Lake Whitney. Rural historic districts cover working properties as well as public roads, so use designated visitor sites and obtain permission for private locations.
