Trinity County
Groveton serves as the seat of Trinity County, with Trinity and Apple Springs among its other communities. Timber history is an important part of this East Texas landscape. Historic school buildings and railway-era photographs help tell that story.
Groveton’s courthouse square and Trinity’s Old Red Schoolhouse show how county government and education shaped local communities. Another part of the story lies at the river: the Riverside Swinging Bridge was built in 1904 and crosses between Trinity and Walker counties. Although its name can suggest a footbridge, it is a railway bridge. These distinct places help connect the county’s civic, school and transportation history.
The Davy Crockett National Forest extends across Trinity and Houston counties. Use the Forest Service recreation information to choose a public access point and check trail or campground notices before a visit.
Build a route around a specific community rather than trying to see the whole county in one stop. Groveton’s courthouse area and Trinity’s historic school building provide different starting points for learning about the county; confirm access before entering historic buildings.
