Kaufman County

Kaufman County was created and organized in 1848. It and the county seat were named for David S. Kaufman, a diplomat and United States representative from Texas. The county’s cultural history includes western artist Frank Reaugh, who moved here in 1876 and drew inspiration from the surrounding landscape. Terrell’s heritage collections provide another route into local history, preserving photographs, documents and objects associated with the community. Together these stories connect public institutions, creative work and everyday lives across the county.

The Terrell Heritage Museum presents community history through its collections, and the heritage society also shares information about local murals and a historic rail car. Check the museum’s current visiting arrangements before setting out. A Terrell visit can anchor one part of a county itinerary, with Kaufman or Forney explored separately according to your interests. Group destinations by town so that each stop has time to offer more than a brief drive-through impression.
