Washington County

Washington County began as a municipality in 1835 and was organized as a county in 1837. It was named for George Washington, and Brenham is its present county seat. At Washington-on-the-Brazos, delegates adopted the Texas Declaration of Independence in 1836 and worked on the republic’s government. The county’s later history includes German immigration during the nineteenth century. Together these political and community histories connect a nationally significant historic site with the lives and settlements that developed across the surrounding area.

The Washington-on-the-Brazos complex includes the townsite experience, Barrington Living History Farm and the Star of the Republic Museum. Its current visitor guide distinguishes daily grounds access from the schedule and admission for interpretive experiences. Review that information before planning the day around a particular attraction. Brenham provides a separate community base, so allow for travel between the county seat and the historic complex rather than assuming that all county destinations share one location.
