Johnson County

Johnson County was established in 1854 and named for Middleton Tate Johnson. Its county seat changed as the county developed: Wardville came first, followed by Buchanan in 1856. The creation of Hood County in 1866 altered the county’s boundaries, and the seat eventually moved to the community that became Cleburne. These changes help explain why a present-day county map does not show the same administrative center as the earliest records. Cleburne remains the seat of county government today.

Cleburne State Park provides a setting for a day outdoors close to the county seat. Use the park’s current information when choosing activities and checking access. The lake has a separate Texas Parks and Wildlife fishing information page, useful for understanding that specific destination. A park outing can be paired with time in Cleburne, while a visit focused on Burleson or another community may work better as a separate part of the itinerary.
