Burnet County

Created in 1852 and organized in 1854, Burnet County honors David Gouverneur Burnet, the provisional president of the Republic of Texas. Fort Croghan and early settlements belong to its nineteenth-century history, followed by railroad connections that influenced places such as Bertram and Marble Falls. During the Depression, major public works changed the region again. Construction associated with Buchanan and Inks dams linked employment, infrastructure and the landscape that later visitors would come to know.

Inks Lake State Park and Longhorn Cavern State Park make a useful pair for understanding the county’s natural variety. One centers on a lake landscape; the other offers access to a cavern through paid guided tours, with free access to the park grounds. Check the official park pages for current conditions and tour arrangements. Leave room in the itinerary for Burnet, Marble Falls or another nearby community rather than trying to cover the entire county at once.
