Jeff Davis County

Jeff Davis County was created in 1887, with Fort Davis as its county seat. Its mountain landscape makes it distinct within the Trans-Pecos region. Fort Davis National Historic Site and the surrounding town connect visitors with several layers of regional history.

Fort Davis contains several layers of history within a relatively small town. The county courthouse was built in 1910–1911, combining Classical Revival forms with a prominent clock tower. It replaced an adobe courthouse that had also served the area before Jeff Davis County was separated from Presidio County. The nearby nineteenth-century military post offers a different setting, linking the town with travel and military activity in the Davis Mountains.

Allow separate time for the town and Fort Davis National Historic Site. The courthouse area is part of a living county seat, while the national historic site has its own visitor facilities and interpretive program. Mountain excursions add another kind of outing beyond those historic stops.
