Eastland County

Eastland County was created in 1858 and organized in 1873. It was named for William Mosby Eastland, a Texas Revolution soldier who later died during the Mier Expedition’s Black Bean executions. The city of Eastland became the county seat after voters chose it over Merriman. Local history also includes the celebrated Old Rip story, a tale associated with a horned lizard and a courthouse cornerstone. That story belongs to the county’s folklore and should be understood in that context.

The Eastland County Museum offers a starting point for exploring local history, including the area’s best-known stories. Cisco and Ranger provide other community stops, and both have colleges that form part of county life. Choose destinations within a particular town before extending an itinerary across the county. Museum schedules, community events and public services may follow different arrangements, so consult the institution or city responsible for the specific stop you have in mind.
