Discover the County

Tarrant County

Tarrant County was established in 1849 and organized in 1850. It was named for Edward H. Tarrant, a lawyer, politician and militia leader, and was one of the counties formed from the Peters Colony. Fort Worth became the county seat. The region’s history also includes Caddo, Tonkawa, Comanche and Cherokee peoples whose homelands and lives preceded county government. Keeping those histories in view adds depth to an account that otherwise might begin only with the growth of the modern urban region.

The Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth offers free admission to its collection, while special exhibitions can have different ticket arrangements. Check the museum’s current visitor information before planning around a particular exhibition. Its accessibility and family pages provide additional practical details. A museum visit can anchor a day in Fort Worth, with other county destinations grouped geographically so that travel time does not crowd out the experience of the places themselves.

What Shapes Us

Fort Worth

Fort Worth serves as county seat and largest city. The county includes other municipalities, so public-service information should be matched to the actual location involved.

Kimbell Collection

Admission to the museum’s collection is free. Review special-exhibition ticketing separately when deciding which parts of the museum you want to include in a visit.

Earlier Histories

Indigenous histories form part of the region before county organization. They belong alongside the account of the Peters Colony and the later growth of its communities.

Distinct communities and cultural places connect a large urban county.
