Lampasas County

Lampasas County was formed in 1856 from portions of Travis, Bell and Coryell counties and was named for the Lampasas River. The town that became the county seat had earlier been laid out as Burleson. Later boundary changes transferred land to Hamilton and Mills counties. Indigenous peoples, including Tonkawa, Lipan Apache and Comanche, were part of the area’s history before county organization. The springs subsequently helped attract settlement and visitors, adding a distinctive thread to the county’s development.

The city’s mineral-springs guide distinguishes Hancock Springs, Hanna Springs and Cooper Spring, helping visitors choose a specific destination. Cooper Spring Nature Park offers a trail setting, while swimming facilities require a separate check of the city’s current pool information. Avoid treating every named spring as a public swimming place. A visit can combine time around these public spaces with the county seat’s other destinations, allowing the water landscape to provide a theme for the day.

What Shapes Us

Springs with Identity

Hancock, Hanna and Cooper springs have different settings and histories. The city’s mineral-springs guide helps visitors understand those distinctions before choosing where to go.

County Boundaries

The county was formed from three neighboring counties in 1856. Later transfers to Hamilton and Mills explain why its earliest boundaries differ from today’s map.

Plan the Right Visit

Park walks and pool visits require different arrangements. Consult the city’s current facility information so that the destination and activity match your plans for the day.
