Randall County

Randall County was created in 1876 and organized in 1889. It was named for Confederate officer Horace Randal, with the county name using a different spelling. Canyon became the county seat. The JA Ranch once held land within the county as part of a much larger operation. Palo Duro Canyon carries a longer and more complex human history, including Indigenous life, military conflict and later park development. Those histories place the modern county within a landscape that has served many different purposes.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is a destination that rewards planning around current conditions and the activities suited to your group. Review official trail information, park alerts and reservations before arriving. The park’s history page provides context beyond the scenery, while time in Canyon offers a community setting for the visit. If extending the trip into Amarillo, keep county boundaries in mind when using public-service information or comparing destinations across the urban area.
