Lamar County

The Congress of the Republic of Texas created Lamar County in December 1840, and the county was organized the following year. It was named for Mirabeau B. Lamar, the republic’s second president. Paris became the county seat. A later chapter is represented by the Sam Bell Maxey House, completed in 1868. Maxey’s career included service as a Confederate general and later as a United States senator, making the house a setting for exploring the political and social changes surrounding Reconstruction.

The Sam Bell Maxey House in Paris provides a focused historic destination. Read the Texas Historical Commission’s account of the house and its residents before visiting, then check the site’s current visitor arrangements. Its architecture and family history offer different ways to approach the same place. Allow time for Paris beyond the house, and use a county map when extending the visit to other communities so that the day remains centered on the places you most want to see.
