Clay County

Clay County was created in 1857 and organized in 1860. Henrietta is its county seat. The courthouse and historic downtown buildings provide a visible connection to its development, while Byers and Petrolia are among its other communities.

The Red River has long shaped the county’s connections with neighboring Oklahoma. The former State Highway 79 truss bridge opened in 1939 and became a recognized historic structure, but it was replaced and demolished in 2018. Its record is therefore part of the county’s past, not a surviving bridge to visit. Henrietta’s courthouse and jail offer a more direct connection with the county seat’s built heritage.

Begin in Henrietta and use county information to plan public-service visits. When exploring older buildings or rural areas, stay on public routes and confirm access before entering a property.

Begin with Henrietta for a closer look at county-seat history, then choose any wider drive around an established destination. Older photographs can show structures that no longer exist; the historic bridge record is included here as background, not as a current attraction.
