Fayette County

Fayette County was created in 1837 from parts of Bastrop and Colorado counties and organized the following year. Its name honors the Marquis de Lafayette, the French supporter of the American Revolution. German and Czech settlement became important parts of the county’s cultural history. La Grange developed as the county seat, while historic places elsewhere in the county preserve additional strands of local life. Together, these histories connect Republic-era administration with later patterns of immigration and community development.

Kreische Brewery and Monument Hill State Historic Sites provide an opportunity to explore two connected places near La Grange. Use the Texas Historical Commission’s visitor information to distinguish self-guided access from tours that require arrangements. The setting invites attention to both the historic structures and the surrounding landscape. A visit here can be combined with time in La Grange, allowing separate space in the itinerary for a historic site and the county seat.
