Coleman County

Coleman County was formed in 1858 and named for Robert M. Coleman, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. County organization began in 1862 and was completed in 1864. Camp Colorado served as the county seat until 1876, when a more central location was selected for the town of Coleman. Santa Anna developed later in the decade. These changes show how the county’s administrative and community centers took shape in several stages rather than all at once.

Hords Creek Lake provides an outdoor counterpart to time in Coleman and Santa Anna. Use the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recreation pages to identify a particular park, then review current closures before traveling. Camping and day-use areas have their own arrangements, so match a reservation or route to the correct facility. A town visit and a lake outing can form separate parts of a county itinerary without assuming identical access or opening schedules.

What Shapes Us

Changing County Seats

Camp Colorado preceded Coleman as the county seat. The move in 1876 helps explain why county histories discuss both places when describing early local government.

Hords Creek Lake

Official recreation listings identify facilities around Hords Creek Lake. Choose a named park and check its status when planning a camping or day-use visit.

Coleman and Santa Anna

The county seat and Santa Anna provide two distinct community stops. Their nineteenth-century development forms part of the broader story of settlement within the county.

Community history and open country make room for discovery.
