Donley County

Donley County was created in 1876 and organized in 1882. Its name honors Stockton P. Donley, a justice of the Texas Supreme Court. Clarendon became the county seat and remains its main community center. The Saints’ Roost Museum adds context to the area’s history through collections associated with Panhandle ranches and local life. Its home in the former Adair Hospital also connects the museum building itself with the region’s ranching families and institutions of the early twentieth century.

The Saints’ Roost Museum is a useful first stop for learning about Clarendon and the surrounding Panhandle. Alongside its exhibits, the site includes a restored railroad depot. Check the museum’s current visiting arrangements before planning a day around its collections. Beyond that stop, allow time for the town itself and the longer drives that come with exploring a rural county. Local sources are the best starting point for a particular event or public service.

What Shapes Us

County Beginnings

Creation in 1876 and organization in 1882 mark different stages of the county’s development. Clarendon serves as the county seat and largest city today.

Saints’ Roost

The museum’s collections explore local and Panhandle history. Its name recalls a nickname associated with Clarendon’s early identity as a community founded around prohibition.

A Historic Building

The museum occupies the former Adair Hospital, built in 1910 for JA Ranch cowboys and their families. The building adds another layer to the visit.

Ranching memories and Panhandle places keep local history close.
