Bexar County

Created in 1836, Bexar County once covered an enormous part of the Republic of Texas. Its name comes from San Antonio de Béxar, whose earlier history includes Spanish missions, a military presidio and a civil settlement established by Canary Island families in 1731. The modern county is much smaller, but those earlier layers remain important to understanding its identity. The San Antonio River links many of the places where that long community history can be explored.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park provides a focused way to experience part of the county’s history. Mission Concepción, Mission San José, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada are separate sites within the park, so plan time between them. The National Park Service provides current visiting information. Beyond historic sites, the county’s landscape changes across the Balcones Escarpment, from hills and springs in the north toward prairie and South Texas plains farther south.

What Shapes Us

Layers of History

Mission communities, the presidio and the civil settlement of San Antonio de Béxar belong to different parts of a history that predates the modern county.

Across the Escarpment

The Balcones Escarpment crosses the county, helping define its changing terrain. Hills, springs, prairie and the San Antonio River all contribute to the local landscape.

Connected Communities

San Antonio anchors the county, while municipalities such as Helotes, Alamo Heights and Universal City contribute additional local identities within the larger metropolitan setting.

Many neighborhoods carry the river’s long community story forward.
