Reeves County

Reeves County was created in 1883 and organized in 1884. Pecos became its county seat, while Toyah and Balmorhea developed distinct local identities. Ranching, farming and the arrival of the Texas and Pacific Railway are important parts of its story.

Pecos has places that connect local history with the town’s built environment. The West of the Pecos Museum occupies a saloon dating to 1896 and a hotel added in 1904; the museum itself opened in 1963. Nearby, the Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame uses the old Texas and Pacific depot to tell the stories of rodeo participants. Together, these sites link hospitality, railway travel and rodeo with the wider Trans-Pecos landscape.

Balmorhea State Park offers a spring-fed swimming destination in the southern part of the county. Reservations, closures and swimming arrangements should be checked directly with the park before making the drive.

Consider a museum-focused stop in Pecos before continuing toward the county’s outdoor destinations. The West of the Pecos Museum and the Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame provide complementary exhibits; consult their own visitor pages for current admission and opening arrangements.
