Hood County was formed in 1866 from part of Johnson County. Granbury is its county seat, and the courthouse square remains a recognizable center of the town. Lipan, Tolar and part of Cresson offer other perspectives on county life.
Granbury’s courthouse square is a group of historic buildings rather than a single landmark. The limestone courthouse, built in 1890–1891 to a design by W. C. Dodson, anchors the district. The district entered the National Register in 1974, and its mix of civic and commercial architecture provides a useful way to read the town’s nineteenth-century development.
