Harris County

Harris County was created in December 1836 and organized in March 1837. It takes its name from John Richardson Harris, who founded Harrisburg on Buffalo Bayou in 1826. Houston became the county seat and grew into the county’s largest city. The relationship between waterways, settlement and transport provides an early framework for understanding the region. Today’s extensive urban landscape belongs to a much larger metropolitan area, making the county’s own boundaries useful to distinguish from those of Houston and surrounding communities.

The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center provides trails and a nature center within the city. Admission to those areas is free, while parking arrangements are separate and should be checked before a visit. Treat it as one destination within a larger county itinerary, grouping nearby stops to reduce travel. Houston and Harris County operate different services, and other municipalities have their own responsibilities, so use the source that matches the specific location or facility you need.

County and City

Houston is the county seat, but Harris County extends beyond the city. Match public-service questions to the appropriate municipality or county department for the location.
