Discover the County
Irion County, Texas
Irion County lies southwest of San Angelo, where rolling ranch country meets the waterways of the Concho Valley. Created from Tom Green County in 1889, it takes its name from Robert Anderson Irion. Mertzon is the county seat; Sherwood and Barnhart are also part of the county’s story.
Sherwood was the original county seat. Railroad development helped Mertzon grow, and county government moved there in 1936. Today, a visit can pair courthouse architecture and the Irion County Museum with a stop at the local library or a community outing in Mertzon. Use the official links below for access details and current schedules.
