Hamilton County
Hamilton County was created in 1858. Hamilton is the county seat, while Hico and part of Evant are other communities. Indigenous histories precede the county’s formation and belong alongside the later history of settlement, farming and town development.
Hamilton’s courthouse shows how a public building can change while retaining an older core. The original building dates to 1887, but an enlargement in 1931–1932 added north and south wings and columned entrance features to the east and west. Its present appearance therefore represents more than one building campaign. The courthouse was placed on the National Register in 1980.
