Deaf Smith County
Deaf Smith County was created in 1876 and organized in 1890. Hereford is its county seat and an important agricultural community. Historic buildings and the county museum connect visitors with the area’s farming, ranching and settlement history.
The county’s western edge includes a cross-border chapter of Route 66 history. Glenrio began as a railroad community and later served highway travelers on the Texas–New Mexico line. The historic district includes traces of that roadside economy, from service stations to dining and lodging buildings. It was added to the National Register in 2007. In Hereford, the E. B. Black House offers a different connection with local history through the county museum.
Explore Hereford’s public spaces and local history, then use official information to plan any longer trip. Glenrio lies on the Texas–New Mexico border and is associated with historic Route 66; abandoned buildings are not an invitation to enter private property.
Hereford and Glenrio are very different destinations, so plan them as separate stops. Use the county museum for an interpreted local-history visit. Glenrio includes privately owned and deteriorating structures; view the historic landscape only from places where access is permitted.
