Jackson County

Jackson County’s origins reach back to a municipality created in 1835, when Texas was part of Mexico. It was organized as a county in 1836 during the Republic of Texas period. The name honors Andrew Jackson, who was president of the United States at the time. Edna is the modern county seat. Distinguishing the early municipality from the later county helps explain the two dates that appear in local histories and reference materials about its establishment.

Brackenridge Park and Campground and Texana Park and Campground sit on opposite sides of Highway 111 in the Lake Texana area. The operator’s website describes trails and day-use facilities for both, making it useful to choose a particular park before setting out. Texana Park was formerly Lake Texana State Park, so older references may use a different name. Check the current operator’s information for reservations, access and the facilities relevant to your visit.

What Shapes Us

Early County Roots

A municipality was established in 1835, followed by county organization in 1836. These dates describe the transition from Mexican-era administration to the Republic of Texas.

Two Lake Parks

Brackenridge and Texana parks offer separate destinations in the Lake Texana area. Choose the correct park when looking up directions, trails and reservation information.

A Changed Park Name

Texana Park and Campground was formerly Lake Texana State Park. Current operator information is the best reference when an older guide uses the state-park name.
