Concho County

The legislature created Concho County in 1858, and local government was organized in 1879. Paint Rock became the county seat, taking its name from nearby pictographs that belong to the area’s much longer Indigenous history. Eden was established in 1882, and Lowake followed in 1909. These dates trace separate stages in the development of the county’s communities. The river name, rock art and later town names each preserve a different connection with the surrounding landscape.

Paint Rock and Eden are useful starting points for understanding county life and locating services. The county covers nearly a thousand square miles, so give travel between stops a realistic place in your plans. The presence of historic pictographs does not itself establish public access to the land around them; confirm visitor arrangements before planning a stop. For everyday information, begin with county offices or the municipal source relevant to your destination.
