San Jacinto County
San Jacinto County was created in 1870 and named for the Battle of San Jacinto. Coldspring is its county seat. The courthouse and old jail connect the town to county history, while Shepherd and Point Blank provide other starting points for exploring the area.
Coldspring’s present courthouse reflects a major change in the town’s layout. A 1915 fire destroyed the earlier wooden courthouse, although records stored in a brick vault survived. The replacement was completed in 1917 after the town center shifted south. Its Classical Revival design and locally made brick make it a useful focal point for understanding the newer square, while the old jail preserves a connection with the earlier townsite.
