Loving County

Loving County was created in 1887 and reorganized in 1931 after an earlier period of disorganization. Mentone is its county seat. The Pecos River, travel routes and the energy industry are important parts of the county’s history.

Mentone’s courthouse is a compact example of how county government took physical shape during an oil-era boom. Completed in 1935, it replaced a temporary courthouse used after the county’s 1931 organization. Architect Evan J. Wood chose the Moderne style, giving the two-story building a different character from the elaborate nineteenth-century courthouses seen elsewhere in Texas. The building entered the National Register in 2006.

This is a sparsely populated county with limited visitor services. Start with county information, plan fuel and water before a drive, and view historic places from public areas. Ranch and industrial roads are not public recreation routes.

Mentone is best approached as a small working county seat. The courthouse, post office and surrounding landscape offer a focused view of the community. Plan fuel and other travel needs before arriving, and treat government buildings as operating offices rather than assumed tourist attractions.
