Fisher County
Fisher County was created in 1876 and organized in 1886. Roby became its county seat, and Rotan, Sylvester and part of Hamlin are other communities associated with the county. Farming, ranching and small-town commerce are part of the local story.
Fisher County’s historical record reaches much further back than its towns. The Foy Steadman Site near Noodle is associated with Folsom-era archaeology and was added to the National Register in 1971. A local postman brought the site to archaeological attention in the 1960s. It is significant as a research site, not as a developed visitor attraction; the county’s public communities provide the appropriate setting for a casual outing.
A visit can begin in Roby’s courthouse area and continue to Rotan or Sylvester. Use county notices for current community information, and respect private property when viewing older buildings and rural historic places.
For a day out, focus on established public places in Roby, Rotan and the surrounding communities. Archaeological references help explain the depth of the county’s past, but they should not be used as directions to enter private land or search for artifacts.
