Culberson County was created in 1911 and organized in 1912. Van Horn is its county seat and a practical travel base. The county stretches north toward Guadalupe Mountains National Park, where the landscape differs sharply from the highway corridor.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park holds architectural history as well as mountain scenery. Wallace Pratt’s residence, known as Ship on the Desert, was begun in 1941 and completed after wartime interruption in 1945. Its long, low International Style design contrasts with more rustic buildings in the mountains. The county’s historic record also includes the Pinery stage stop and buildings in Van Horn, connecting mountain landscapes with travel routes and town life.
